Sawtelle Gemini by Tom Flynn
06/07/2024
When Chris unexpectedly sees Gwen dancing at a bar in Los Angeles, a flood of emotions comes rushing back. Four years prior he had been falling in love with this girl and due to circumstances beyond his understanding, the relationship ended abruptly — and without explanation.
Now a little older and wiser, Chris is determined to understand why things fell apart and to potentially win Gwen back. But in attempting to do so he must face his past mistakes and he must also face the supernatural.
Chris is forced to be honest with himself about his old life in Nebraska with his high school sweetheart, Sara - who died in a tragic accident. He must also work up the courage to travel back to Nebraska to look her parents in the eye and explain why he hasn't spoken to them for so many years and why he moved to Los Angeles.
The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1996 and then jumps to 2000. Along the way, Chris is supported greatly by:
1) Miguel, his understated roommate and best friend. He doesn't speak much but he is always willing to help.
2) Leah, his boss (and close friend) at the marketing firm. She is the kind of supportive boss that you dream of.
3) Pearl, his neighbor and his spiritual guide. Pearl is a fun, insightful, and quirky octogenarian that always wears her unique cat-eye sunglasses and vintage dresses and she helps Chris with her ability to commune with spirits. Pearl has a soft spot for Chris even though she knows he's made mistakes.
Throughout the story, much attention is placed on Chris' painting - the young artist dives deeply into the world of his paintings taking great pains to describe the swirling shapes and colors. Chris' love of art is a consistent theme of the book.
Toward the very end of the story, Chris earns an opportunity to show his paintings in a gallery and the artwork is very well received and sells well.
Throughout the narrative, the author explores the nature of love and respect, alongside the enduring impact of early romantic experiences. Chris's reconnection with Gwen sparks a resurgence of passion and longing, prompting him to reflect on the depth of their connection and his role in their separation.
